Novo Nordisk Brings Weight-Loss Treatment to a New Era as Wegovy® Pill Becomes UK's First Daily GLP-1 Obesity Tablet

Chicago, Illinois, USA; Novo Nordisk has opened a new chapter in obesity treatment after securing UK approval for Wegovy® pill, the first daily GLP-1 weight-loss tablet approved in Europe. The decision by the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) gives millions of people living with obesity a new treatment option that does not require weekly injections.

For years, GLP-1 drugs have transformed obesity and metabolic disease treatment by helping patients achieve meaningful and sustained weight loss. However, many people delayed treatment because they were uncomfortable with needles or preferred a simpler daily routine.

With Wegovy® pill, Novo Nordisk is aiming to remove that barrier.

The approval is designed for adults living with obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher, and for adults who are overweight with at least one weight-related health condition. The treatment is prescribed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

The milestone is particularly important as obesity continues to rise across the United Kingdom.

Today, around 15 million people in the UK are living with obesity. Health experts also project that by 2040, nearly 71% of adults in the country could be overweight or living with obesity, creating growing pressure on healthcare systems.

The approval was supported by findings from Novo Nordisk's Phase 3 OASIS 4 clinical trial.

The study involved 307 adults with obesity or overweight and at least one obesity-related condition. Participants did not have type 2 diabetes, allowing researchers to focus specifically on weight-management outcomes.

The results showed a level of weight loss rarely seen with oral medicines.

After 64 weeks, participants taking semaglutide tablets achieved an average weight reduction of 13.6%, compared with 2.4% among those receiving a placebo. Among participants who remained on treatment throughout the study, average weight loss reached 16.6%, while the placebo group recorded 2.7%.

These results strengthen the growing role of GLP-1 drugs in obesity care and demonstrate that oral therapies can now deliver weight-loss outcomes approaching those seen with injectable treatments.

For many patients, this level of weight reduction can significantly improve blood pressure, cardiovascular health, mobility, sleep quality, and overall metabolic well-being.

Like other GLP-1 therapies, the most commonly reported side effects were gastrointestinal in nature.

Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea were reported in 74% of participants taking semaglutide tablets, compared with 42.2% in the placebo group. Most side effects were mild to moderate and generally became less frequent over time.

Only 6.9% of participants discontinued treatment because of adverse events, a rate similar to that seen with injectable semaglutide therapies.

Healthcare leaders view the approval as an important step toward expanding access to obesity treatment.

Despite obesity affecting millions of people, only a small percentage currently receive medical treatment. Many experts believe that providing patients with both injectable and oral GLP-1 drugs can improve long-term engagement and treatment success.

The UK has now become the first European country to approve Wegovy® pill, placing it at the forefront of next-generation obesity care.

Novo Nordisk expects the medicine to become available through private prescriptions within weeks. The company has also announced plans to introduce the treatment in selected international markets during the second half of 2026.

As healthcare systems continue to battle rising rates of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other metabolic disorders, the arrival of an effective daily GLP-1 tablet could reshape how weight management is approached in the years ahead.

For patients seeking a convenient alternative to injections, Novo Nordisk's Wegovy® pill represents more than a new medicine offers a new pathway toward long-term weight management and better health outcomes.
