Moderna and Oxford Secure $60 Million CEPI Funding to Advance Ebola Bundibugyo Vaccine Development During Congo Outbreak

Los Angeles, California, USA, The ongoing Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has prompted renewed efforts across the vaccine industry to accelerate the development of effective preventive solutions.

In response to the growing public health challenge, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) announced a funding package of $60 million to support vaccine research and development programs led by Moderna and the University of Oxford.

CEPI, which played a pivotal role in supporting vaccine innovation during the COVID-19 pandemic, is now directing resources toward strengthening preparedness against the Ebola Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), a less common but serious strain of Ebola.

The investment highlights the increasing importance of infectious disease prevention, vaccine innovation, and rapid-response biopharmaceutical development in addressing emerging global health threats.

According to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization, Congo has reported 282 confirmed Ebola Bundibugyo cases, including 42 deaths.

Health authorities are also monitoring nearly 1,100 suspected cases, emphasizing the urgent need for advanced vaccine candidates and scalable immunization solutions.

As part of the initiative, CEPI will provide up to $50 million to support the preclinical and early clinical development of Moderna’s investigational BDBV vaccine candidate.

The funding is expected to strengthen manufacturing readiness, expand clinical trial capabilities, and support future late-stage development activities if initial findings demonstrate favorable safety and efficacy outcomes.

Richard Hatchett, Chief Executive Officer of CEPI, told Reuters that vaccine candidates designed for clinical testing could become available within a matter of months.

He noted that the prospect of viable vaccines emerging in the near term is already encouraging discussions regarding procurement strategies, commercialization pathways, and funding mechanisms required to support future vaccine deployment.

The development reflects a broader trend within the vaccine market, where governments, public health organizations, and biotechnology companies are increasingly investing in next-generation vaccines to improve pandemic preparedness and outbreak response capabilities.

Meanwhile, Moderna Chief Executive Officer Stephane Bancel stated that the company has generated promising results from preclinical Ebola studies.

The encouraging findings have strengthened confidence in the vaccine candidate's potential as it progresses through the research and development pipeline.
