Mempro™ Plant-based Virus-like Particle Production Now Available at Creative Biostructure

Creative Biostructure, a biotech company that specialized in providing cost-effective contract services to both academia and pharmaceutical industries in the field of structural biology, now offers VLP production services with various types of plants. VLPs carrying the desired membrane proteins are known as lipid particles, which are widely used to produce integral membrane proteins. Lipid particles can detach directly from the cell membrane without mechanical disruption or detergent, thus preserving the native conformation of the membrane protein of interest. Conventional expression hosts for VLP production include bacterial, yeast, insect, and mammalian cell systems. However, these expressing hosts require time-consuming transformation and regeneration processes, and they may even pose a risk of contamination by endotoxin or pathogens. Creative Biostructure can bypass these difficulties by using innovative plant systems that can rapidly generate candidate VLPs for membrane protein production. To support scientists with their research, Creative Biostructure now offers VLP production services with various plant types, covering Nicotiana benthamiana (tobacco), Medicago rativa (alfalfa), Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana), potato and lettuce. For expressing VLPs in these plant systems, two different strategies are utilized: Stable transformation system Note that the stable transformation system is not suitable for rapid screening of a wide range of viral vectors for VLP production. Transient expression system Now, a large variety of viruses have been employed for the transient expression of VLPs in plants, including hepatitis B virus core-like particles (CLPs), papillomaviruses, bluetongue virus, norovirus, influenza virus and cowpea mosaic virus. “We have extensive experience for producing numerous VLPs in plants, enabling comprehensively structural and functional studies on membrane proteins for applications such as vaccine development.” Commented Joanna, one of the marketing staff at Creative Biostructure. Moreover, Creative Biostructure offers virus-like particle construction service, virus-like nanoparticle production service and various VLP products for research use.
