Polymers are very large molecular weight polymers formed by covalent bonding of small molecule repeating units, which were proposed by Staedinger after 1920. The establishment of the concept of polymer promotes the rapid development of polymer materials. Today synthetic polymers have spread throughout all corners of our lives. Looking around, the paint of the table, the keyboard of the computer, the insulation layer of the wire, the tape, the shell of the ballpoint pen, the fabric of the backpack, the sole of the shoe, the food packaging bag, the beverage bottle, and the seat cushion of the chair all belong to the polymer materials. Polymer synthesis, also called polymerization, is the process by which monomers (small molecules) are covalently bonded to form (usually long) polymer chains or networks. According to the initial system of chemical reaction, polymerization methods can be divided into four categories: bulk polymerization, suspension polymerization, emulsion polymerization and polycondensation polymerization. The key to obtaining the desired molecular weight and narrow polydispersity polymers is to use appropriately selected polymerization methods to provide the best controllability and durability during polymer synthesis.
